SERVICING & INSPECTION

WATER BASED FIRE EXTINGUISHERS
These fire extinguishers fight fire by spraying water. They are most effective against solid organic materials such as; wood, plastics, paper, coal, etc.
They aren’t for use against electrical or fat/oil based fires.

FOAM BASED FIRE EXTINGUISHERS
A foam based extinguisher uses a foam that douses the fire. This results in a layer between the fuel surface and flames.
Foam extinguishers are also suitable for both solid and liquid fire bases.
They are not suitable for use against electrical or fat pan/oil based fires

POWDER BASED FIRE EXTINGUISHERS
A powder based extinguisher blasts the fire with a special powder. This powder causes the flames to cool to a point where the chemical reaction can no longer occur.
Suitable or use against organic solids, grease/oil, petrol and gas fires.
The main problem with these extinguishers is the powder, which can cause breathing difficulties. It causes a ‘fog’ which can hinder evacuation and is also extremely messy to clear away. British Standards no longer permit ABC Powder Extinguishers to be used in offices and living accommodation due to this problem. ABC Powder Extinguishers are therefore only recommended for use in well-ventilated areas.

CO2 FIRE EXTINGUISHERS
CO2 Fire Extinguishers shoot carbon dioxide. CO2 removes the oxygen from the chemical reaction, effectively smothering the fire. This makes the CO2 extinguisher extremely effective.
On the other hand, the CO2 can dissipate fairly quickly, allowing the fire to potentially reignite. This type of extinguisher is ideal for electrical fires and live electrical equipment.

WET CHEMICAL FIRE EXTINGUISHERS
These fire extinguishers are perfect for class F fires involving chip fat/oil based fires. This type of extinguishers sprays out a fine mist, which sits as a layer of foam on top.
You’re likely to find this type of equipment in locations where oil is cooked to a high temperature.

FIRE BLANKETS
The essential performance requirement of a fire blanket is to extinguish a cooking oil fire and allow the oil to cool gradually.
Kite marked blankets comply with BS EN1869:1997.
A strong and supple blanket provides user confidence. They’re well insulated yet easily drape over fire.
